Following up on our recent blog article featuring some of our ASD instrument user’s adventure stories, we have found a winner!
Alex Fortescue, Remote Sensing and GIS Manager with Southern Mapping Company, earns first place and the Kindle – congratulations, Alex!
Here’s his full story:
“I was tasked with deriving spectra for asbestos related minerals in Mpumalanga province South Africa. The site was an abandoned asbestos mine and on arriving we realised the site was in fact in a game reserve. I have an awesome pic (not on the web but I can send it) of the "BEWARE OF LIONS" sign at the gate. Our field visit on the abandoned asbestos mine was nerve wracking to say the least as we had to watch our backs for lions - Our Fieldspec 3 provided perfect spectra and a subsequent hyperspectral airborne overflight allowed us to identify endmembers for asbestos related minerals thereby demonstrating our ability to map this mineral. The South African Dept Minerals and Energy are now wanting to use this technology to map asbestos around poor communities in South Africa which are at risk to asbestosis a deadly lung cancer caused by fibrous asbestos contamination.”
We thank everyone who submitted an entry and as a token of our appreciation, we will send each of the readers who shared their story with us an ASD field hat so they can more comfortably continue their adventures in the field!
This isn’t the end of your opportunity to share your stories and successes with your ASD instrumentation. You are always welcome to send us comments, suggestions for improvement, ideas for accessories and your general love of your ASD instrument to marketing@asdi.com.
